This client, when moving to Austin from California, was unable to bring her favorite piece of furniture as part of the move, due to the limited space in her home. I designed a piece using an Arts & Crafts style that would perfectly fit the new space in the dining room, and would also be able to house everything related to serving. This 12 1/4 foot hutch is made with 7 different modules, easily assembled and disassembled if a move ever occured again. In fact, in 2023, after 12 years in its place, the hutch was disassembled to accompany the client's move back to California.
Quater-sawn white oak and veneered plywood were used for the hutch. All of the doors have soft-close European hinges and all of the cabinets include adjustable shelving. The drawers are dovetailed, and are mounted with soft close runners. The flush-mounted inset doors and drawers have a perfect gap the width of the thickness of a penny. LED strip lights were added inside the upper cabinets to help highlight fine diningware through the glass doors. Connected to a DC Converter on the top of the hutch, the LED strips are hard-wired to the house and can be turned on with a wall switch. They can also be dimmed.
The piece was finished using a custom created dye with danatured alcohol as the solvent. To add a little flair, ebony was used to simulate peg-style joinery for the doors, as well as to highlight interior corners on the cabinetry.
